Beer Hangover – Liquor Before Beer – You Bet

Ever had a beer hangover? Yes?! Me to. So, you know just how miserable it is. Whether you’re drinking beer or mixed drinks, (Don’t be fooled into thinking that a beer hangover is any different than a hangover you get from mixed drinks) too much alcohol WILL result in a nasty hangover. While there’s no guaranteed cure for a hangover, there are things you can do to alleviate your suffering and feel better.

Start with Mixed Drinks and End with Beer

It’s usually recommended that you don’t mix your alcohol, but if you must, start with mixed drinks and end with beer. This may help reduce the severity of your hangover. There’s an old saying that goes, “Beer before liquor, never been sicker; liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.” Or, as I like to put it, “Beer before booze, you gonna lose; Booze before Beer, never fear.” While the science behind this isn’t exactly clear, many people find that it works.

Keep Track of Your Drinking

When it comes to mixed drinks, they’re usually made to taste sweet and go down easily. This can lead to inadvertently drinking more than you intended and getting a worse hangover. Beer isn’t sweet and can be easier to keep track of how much you’re drinking. One 12 oz. beer is, more or less, equal to a shot and a half (1.5 ounces) of booze or 5 ounces of wine.

Stay Hydrated

After a night of drinking, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to help flush out the alcohol from your system. You could drink coffee or soda but be sure to take small sips and limit yourself to one or two cups or glasses. The caffeine may help revive you, but it’s also dehydrating, which ultimately defeats the purpose. Stick to water for the most part.

Eat Something Bland

If you wake up with a beer hangover and can’t stomach eating breakfast, stick to something bland like saltine crackers. This can help settle your stomach and prevent nausea. Avoid milk, as it can irritate your stomach. If you need to drink something, stick to water.

Take Pain Relievers with Food

If you have a headache, taking pain relievers like ibuprofen or aspirin can help alleviate your symptoms. However, be sure to take them with food to prevent stomach irritation. Saltine crackers can be a good option if you need something to eat.

Rest and Relax

After you’ve hydrated and eaten something, it’s best to go back to bed and get some more rest. When you wake up, drink a sports drink to replenish any electrolytes you may have lost from drinking. This can also help raise your blood sugar levels. If you don’t have a sports drink, stick to water.

Give yourself the rest of the day to relax and take it easy. Order in food so you don’t have to cook, or heat up a can of soup. You probably won’t have the energy to do much, so just take it easy and let your body recover.

While there’s no surefire way to cure a hangover, there are things you can do to alleviate your symptoms and feel better. Keep track of your drinking, stay hydrated, eat something bland, and take pain relievers with food. Rest, relax, and give yourself time to recover. By following these tips you’ll be on your way to feeling better in no time.
